The Beginning

The purpose of this blog is to chronicle my outdoor and amateur radio activities.  I've been a licensed radio amateur since 2006 and an avid hiker/backpacker for much longer.  I intend to spend more time enjoying these hobbies in the future and thought it would be fun to share my (mis)adventures.

Winter is coming here in central Oregon, so I'm planning on breaking out the snowshoes and getting OUT THERE this year.  I didn't go snowshoeing even one time last year!  That's definitely going to change this year.  I'm also planning to do more in my other favorite hobby, amateur radio.  I am interested in combining my outdoors pursuits with amateur radio in the form of QRP (low power) operating.  Eventually I would like to purchase a portable transceiver, but right now that would be selfish of me considering how tight our finances are at the moment.  However, I do have a Small Wonder Labs kit for the 30 meter band that I need to assemble, and so that is on my "to-do" list.

Next spring my wife and I are planning to go to the Oregon coast for a weekend getaway, and it is possible that by then I might have a portable transceiver and some sort of portable antenna with which to work the HF bands.  If I can find a nice mountaintop to park the car and operate from, or barring that, even set up on the beach somewhere, that will add an element of radio fun to the getaway.  We'll see how things go in that regard.
